Age-appropriate chores, by age

  • Ages 4–6: make bed, brush teeth, get dressed, tidy toys, feed a pet, clear their plate. Keep it to 4–6 picture chores.
  • Ages 7–9: add packing their backpack, setting the table, reading time and putting laundry in the basket.
  • Ages 10–12: unloading the dishwasher, taking out trash, folding laundry, walking the dog, vacuuming.
  • Ages 13+: their own laundry, cooking a simple dinner, mowing, cleaning a bathroom, helping siblings.

Tips that make a chart stick

  • Put it at kid height — the fridge or their bedroom door.
  • Let kids check boxes themselves. Owning the tick is half the fun.
  • Agree on the reward before the week starts and write it on the chart.
  • Missed a day? Skip it and keep going. Charts work best without punishment.
